Flood Protection.

Here at 1st Defence Fabrications Ltd we have designed & manufactured Flood Gates that have been approved and used by Environment Agencies and local authority flood alleviation & prevention schemes throughout the UK

 

Rising Sea Levels

With rising sea levels, Flood Gates are now being designed as an integral part of new sea defences all along our UK coastline, incorporating a range of watertight steel Flood Gates & Storm Gates. These gates are built directly into new concrete wave walls or manufactured as a free standing structure between existing walls. Heavy seas & transported debris impose massive structural loading on the gates in storm conditions, these gates are designed to withstand these impact loads whilst protecting coastal towns from tidal surges.

Adverse Weather Conditions

Adverse weather conditions and extreme or consistent heavy rain fall is now commonplace creating regular flash flooding across the country. Our range of steel Bespoke Flood Gates designed specifically for river defenses are currently being implemented by the Environment Agency. Whilst such steel structures do have a visual impact on the surrounding areas all design considerations are given to minimize the impact on the visual aesthetic. We offer a range of alternative finishes to the gate surface including options of timber cladding, stainless steel engravings or architectural sculptures mounted on the gates leaf to enhance their appearance.

Operation & Maintenance.

The Flood Gates are a hinged assembly designed for easy operation using minimum effort in normal weather conditions.

The latching operation takes a short time to fully close and lock the gate from the fully open position.

The latching assembly is a very robust simple thread design, which has so far proved to be virtually indestructible, manufactured from stainless steel with a bronze nut housing & base pivot assembly that is lined with two bronze thrust washers.

An operating spanner is required, to open and close the gates supplied by us, there is an added option available to padlock the latch assembly to prevent unauthorized access.

The hinges are manufactured from mild steel & supplied with stainless steel hinge pins & grease points, these hinges are full Oilite bearing assemblies with thrust washers manufactured from bronze.

The gate seals are a hand made composite construction, Uv stable and manufactured from EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) covered in a 2mm solid neoprene skin,  this construction ensures durability.

The gates are supplied as standard with a 300 micron multi coat epoxy paint system for durability & minimum maintenance. Coastal Flood Gates will require additional  protection with a  marine epoxy coat. All gates are available in any RAL or BS  colour.

As an alternative to our steel gates we manufacture stainless steel S316 gates for the costal environment.
